History of Tomball
Settlement began in the Tomball area in the early 19th century, where immigrants found an open, fertile land that received adequate rainfall, perfect conditions for farming and raising cattle.
Just after the turn of the 20th Century this simple railroad stop and surrounding community was named Peck, Texas, but was renamed Tomball in honor of Thomas Ball, the man responsible for routing the railroad and its operations through the small town.
Thomas Ball was a former congressman who practiced law in Houston, was three-time mayor of Huntsville, Texas and is known as the “Father of the Port of Houston”. His bringing rail service to the community ensured continued, future growth.
While the boom of the railroad lasted less than a decade, the oil and gas industry began to leave its mark on the area. Tomball grew and prospered over the next 25-years, and on May 27th, 1933 the Humble Oil Company struck oil southwest of town earning Tomball the nickname, “Oiltown USA” and the “Floating Island of Oil”. Humble Oil Company is now known as Exxon, and more than 20 other energy companies worked the fields around the city for many years producing more than 100 million barrels of oil and 316 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Tomball is an area between State Highway 249 and FM 2920, and has continued to grow with Antique Shops and many small businesses. Tomball has beautiful parks such as Spring Creek Park, Jerry Matheson Park and Juergens Park. If you love history, visit the Tomball Museum Center, a repository for history of the area.
